Blog Post #7: Learning from Documentaries

The documentary I chose to watch and analyze was “Bama Rush” on Max. This is a documentary I have been meaning to watch, as I participated in formal sorority recruitment my freshman year (August 2021). This was around the same time #BamaRush started trending on social media platforms such as TikTok, where millions of people watched the videos of women around the country getting ready for recruitment at the University of Alabama (Fliet, 2023). During my two years in the sorority, I realized the environment was toxic and not something I wanted to be involved in. Because of my experience, I was naturally curious if this is an experience held by other women throughout Greek life, and if not, how their experience differs from mine.  The documentary, “Bama Rush” is a story on the history of sorority recruitment at the University of Alabama and follows the journey of women planning to go through the process of sorority recruitment at the university. What are the major elements of story us...

Blog Post #6: Analyze Experiences

Mini Refrigerator Purchase and Evaluation Background : For a little over a year, I have been thinking about purchasing a mini fridge to have in my bedroom. I suffer from chronic migraines and having various remedies easily accessible to me is something I have been considering, as having to go into the kitchen of my shared apartment was inconvenient at times.  Time of Purchase : I found the mini fridge I wanted to purchase (and did) at the beginning of this month.  Expectations : For this product, I needed the mini fridge to be large enough to store various energy drinks, high sodium snacks, water, and most importantly ice packs (in the freezer section). I also needed a mini fridge that did not generate a lot of noise as sometimes I become overstimulated when having a migraine. I knew these were necessary expectations due to the reason for wanting/needing this product. Everything about this mini fridge and the products inside needed to assist in nursing my migraines....

Blog Post #5: Creative Briefs

Image
I chose to review a brief created by Valentine Coget for Quaker. Image I was drawn to this brief as this is the format I choose to use whenever I have created briefs in the past. I really like the color choices. I like that the blue chosen was not the same as the dark blue in the logo, but rather a lighter color. This allows the viewer to understand that the product is by Quaker but is something new. I also like the differing colors per section (switching on and off from dark gray to the light blue) helps create more cohesion and separation between each section. I also appreciate how the white font color is mostly used as the body copy, except for in the “Guidelines” sections. Again with the colors, I like that the icon is a different color from the title. I think sectioning off each specific topic with clean lines with an asymmetrical layout helps the reader's eyes flow through the sections very clearly. The icons and larger font give the readers a clear idea on what each section ...

Blog Post #4: Your Creative Process

My creative process involves sitting down with an idea and thinking about what I currently know, what I need to learn and research, and my current ideas on the project (i.e. color scheme, value statements, emotions, etc.). When I see my visions and ideas come to life, I feel more inspired to branch out with my creative skills and come up with new ideas for further projects.  To better explain my creative process, the following is my creative process laid out for my campaign project in COMSTRAT 381—Media Strategies & Techniques for Advertising—where we are currently working on our campaigns. My campaign is focused on a project I am working on as a student ambassador, a program connecting Strategic Communication with Marketing and Hospitality Business Management. When I first came up with this idea, I was picturing Edward R. Murrow and Scott Carson shaking hands as if to identify the connection and relationship between the colleges.  This project is slightly different from o...

Blog Post #3: Good Questions

The following are options on how to adjust a close-ended question to make it open-ended without changing the meaning.  Question #1: Have you ever sent a text message while driving?  What are your opinions on distracted driving, specifically texting? What are some experiences you have regarding texting and driving?  Question #2: Would you say you travel abroad frequently? What are some travel experiences you have? How has traveling abroad affected your world views?  What are some of your favorite memories while traveling abroad?  Question #3: Do you post a lot of pictures on Instagram? What does your Instagram feed say about you?  How do you decide if a picture is worthy to post on your Instagram?  Do you spend a significant amount of time on social media, specifically platforms like Instagram? Question #4: Do you prefer to shop at big boxes or locally owned stores?  How do you decide to shop at one store over another?  When you think abou...

Blog Post #2: Facts vs. Insights

Image
What are facts and what are insights? How do these two terms differ?  When wondering how two words differ, I find it good to look up the definition from Merriam-Webster’s dictionary. The dictionary defines fact as an objective truth, something that has an actual existence and reality. Insight , however, is defined as “the power or act of seeing into a situation.”  Upon learning the dictionary definition of these words, I had a better understanding of how these words both relate and differ from one another. The biggest difference between the two words is that a fact is objective while an insight is subjective. Facts can be proven, while insights cannot. Insights may display patterns or interpretations of facts, but could differ among individuals. Facts are written in stone. Today The above image displays a fact, "The surface of the sun is around 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit." Regardless of what website an individual uses, the information regarding the temperature of the surface ...

Blog Post #1: Analyzing Communications

Image
In this post, I will be analyzing the People Magazine  special edition issue on the Barbie  movie. This magazine was created in the summer of 2023 when the movie aired on the big screen.  PHOTO: Warner Bros. via ( People ) In June or July of 2023, I saw this magazine in my local Target and was so excited, I needed to purchase it. Upon reading the magazine, I learned so much more about the doll, the movie, and the history of Barbie. Throughout this magazine the stars and supporting cast of the movie highlight their experience in filming this movie (Adato & Warner, 2023).  Besides the creators of the movie and People Magazine , I believe many other important figures such as account planner and media planners were involved in the creation of this special edition issue. Both of these roles are influential pieces to creating effective brand communication. Account planner "put consumers at the center of the communications process" (Krocket, 2013, p. 6).  And,...
